<image:title>Blog - Goldilocks Accounting Software: Scaling Without Breaking the Bank - The short answer we give our clients is always: "It depends."</image:title>
<image:caption>The slightly longer answer? Choosing the right software has less to do with your budget size and everything to do with your reporting complexity. Here is how we help organizations navigate the "Next Phase" trap.</image:caption>

<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/65eb4c06d0234935e92f348b/e670fb28-2ee2-4c20-b438-f744f83ed69a/Excel-Mastery-Could-Be-The-Answer</image:loc>
<image:title>Blog - Goldilocks Accounting Software: Scaling Without Breaking the Bank - To be clear: I often feel grumpy with QBO. It has a laundry list of "dumb" flaws that they never seem to fix. But we recommend it because of its inexpensive and its market dominance; it is easy to find people who know it, and frankly, it's "less bad" than most competition in that price range.</image:title>
<image:caption>When it hits a reporting wall, we recommend an "Excel Bridge." By creating a structured reporting layer in Excel or Google Sheets, you can get high-level insights without a $20,000+ migration and other expenses. Executive Directors must lead financial stewardship and sometimes that means choosing the "good enough" tool that allows for better strategic focus elsewhere.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Advanced Cash Management: Beyond the Dashboard - A cash flow projection is fundamentally different from a budget. Your budget shows what you plan to earn and spend over the year. A cash flow projection shows when specific dollars will move in and out of your bank account, typically looking 3-6 months ahead.</image:title>
<image:caption>This distinction matters enormously. You might have a perfectly balanced budget with a $200K grant awarded and included in revenue. But if that grant pays quarterly in arrears and you have $80K in expenses due in month two while the first payment doesn't arrive until month four, your budget looks fine while your checking account is empty.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/65eb4c06d0234935e92f348b/643fe2e8-f11f-4d90-abc1-c15aa46f852a/a-contemporary-3d-family-friendly-animat_PFz12f5gToy2g9bxvMCzXg_KnsVr5lwS8aTSKzoDBL8WA.png</image:loc>
<image:title>Blog - Advanced Cash Management: Beyond the Dashboard - Small cuts: Sometimes you may also have to consider layoffs. Laying off one person in January can be easier and less disruptive than laying off six people in June when the cash emergency is at your doorstep.</image:title>
<image:caption>These options require lead time. Three months of runway gives you time to have professional conversations with funders or negotiate with vendors. Three days of runway means you're begging for emergency help.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/65eb4c06d0234935e92f348b/13f962b1-c4fb-4a0c-a573-bae44c5f1285/a-contemporary-3d-family-friendly-animat_MV9HJ-aZRumJ65-C-x-n6w_y7-AexBQTEagd1p28tgugg.png</image:loc>
<image:title>Blog - Advanced Cash Management: Beyond the Dashboard - If everything is submitted correctly and the payment is genuinely late, you need to have a professional conversation with your program officer or contracts manager. This conversation is easier when you've been tracking and can be specific: "Our contract agreement indicates payment within 30 days of report submission. We submitted the Q2 report forty-five days ago, and we haven't yet received payment. Can you help me understand the timeline?"</image:title>
<image:caption>Most delays are bureaucratic rather than intentional - approvals sitting on someone's desk, processing backlogs, technical issues. A polite inquiry often accelerates things (don’t channel Rihanna for this one).</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - How to spot financial trends before they become a crisis - This scenario plays out in nonprofit offices too often. Organizations operating lean don't have the luxury of robust reserves, yet most rely on backward-looking monthly reports that show where they've been, not where they're headed. Leadership learns of a problem when it’s knocking on their door rather than on the distant horizon.</image:title>
<image:caption>The good news: you don't need a sophisticated finance team or expensive software to see problems coming. What you need is a simple dashboard that surfaces trends while there's still time to respond.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/65eb4c06d0234935e92f348b/33d7acb1-5cc1-4ebe-b20d-ee450f7f84f7/a-family-friendly-3d-animation-image-of-_C98mPERGQLOm-Z3tzVEkGg_6BH03O_4RPqS5uYlPHgTTg.png</image:loc>
<image:title>Blog - How to spot financial trends before they become a crisis - Watch for patterns where one revenue stream grows while others stagnate or shrink. This often happens gradually and almost invisibly - a major grant renewal increases by 20% while individual giving stays flat, and suddenly you've gone from a balanced portfolio to dangerous dependence.</image:title>
<image:caption>Your dashboard element: a simple stacked bar chart showing revenue by individual source (government grants, foundation grants, individual giving, earned revenue, etc.) for the current year compared to the prior year. Calculate each source as a percentage of total revenue. If any single source creeps above 40-50%, you're entering risk territory.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/65eb4c06d0234935e92f348b/c130712d-5ac3-46f7-a827-a3b629b403ca/a-family-friendly-3d-animation-image-of-_lPX6PXZsRb6o19N4D-arIg_u_rM4KsQSDWeLVaTpY8dCg.png</image:loc>
<image:title>Blog - How to spot financial trends before they become a crisis - Start small. Choose two or three metrics that address your organization's most significant vulnerabilities. If you've had cash crunches before, start with days of cash on hand. If you depend heavily on grants, build your pipeline tracker. Don't try to implement all five trends at once.</image:title>
<image:caption>Use what you already have. Most accounting software can generate the reports you need for basic dashboard metrics. Excel or Google Sheets are perfectly adequate tools for getting started. You don't need to purchase dashboard software or learn how to use it until you've proven the discipline of actually using simpler tools consistently.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - The Silent Crisis: When Your Board Checks Out During Financial Reports - The real question nobody asks: Did your board actually understand what they just heard? More importantly, do they care?</image:title>
<image:caption>Many nonprofit leaders face a disheartening reality: their boards have checked out financially. Not because board members lack integrity or intelligence, but because traditional financial reporting—dense spreadsheets, lengthy narratives, rows of numbers—creates barriers too high for busy volunteers to climb. And when boards disengage from the financial health of the organizations they govern, risks accumulate quietly.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - The Silent Crisis: When Your Board Checks Out During Financial Reports - Think about it from a board member's perspective. You arrive at a meeting already slightly rushed. You're holding multiple thoughts. Someone hands you a ten-page financial packet. Within thirty seconds, you need to shift mental gears and extract meaning from unfamiliar data formats. Most people's brains just... nope.</image:title>
<image:caption>Now imagine instead: you see a dashboard with three or four clear visual indicators of how your organization stands. Your unrestricted reserves (shown as a trend line and a gauge). Your revenue compared to budget (maybe a simple comparison). Your program expense ratio (a single, clear number). You grasp the story in the time it takes to glance at your phone.</image:caption>

Create opportunities for others to represent the organization publicly. When someone asks, "Can we meet with the executive director about this?" consider whether someone else on your team could handle it.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - When Mission Creep Includes Personnel - We talk a lot about mission creep in programs, but what about mission creep in our personnel decisions?</image:title>
<image:caption>Mission creep, the expansion of activities beyond the mission, represents a constant temptation. It can start with good intentions, like when you go on a trip and offer to pack a little something extra for a friend. But when that little something extra becomes a little more, and a little more, before you know it you’ve taken on more than you ever intended and it’s causing a lot of stress and strain!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - When Mission Creep Includes Personnel - When we make staffing decisions based on personal relationships, comfort, or avoiding difficult conversations rather than mission effectiveness, we risk something bigger than individual job security. We risk failing the communities we exist to serve.</image:title>
<image:caption>The families waiting for housing assistance don't care that Terry is nice. The students needing tutoring don't benefit from our desire to avoid making Aspen sad. The animals in shelters aren't helped by our reluctance to make strategic changes.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Your CPA Will Not Take Care of It: Why Executive Directors Must Lead Financial Stewardship - Most American adults, including most executive directors, have some level of math anxiety. If you’re one of them, you’re in good company because this describes 13 out of 14 people. The standard financial reports, and the way they get presented, typically makes this situation worse. They were created with a CPA as the target audience, not you. So it should come as no surprise that dealing with the finances can sometimes feel like getting your teeth pulled.</image:title>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/65eb4c06d0234935e92f348b/ac6cfea3-2ba9-4afc-b371-88df738c9074/contemplative-nonprofit-staff-hates-numbers-and-math.png</image:loc>
<image:title>Blog - Your CPA Will Not Take Care of It: Why Executive Directors Must Lead Financial Stewardship - Many executive directors have also internalized the belief that financial management isn't "mission work." When you're passionate about serving your community, dealing with budgets and cash flow can feel like a distraction from “the real work.” This mindset creates an artificial separation between mission and money that simply doesn't exist in successful nonprofits.</image:title>
</image:image>
<image:image>

<image:title>Blog - Your CPA Will Not Take Care of It: Why Executive Directors Must Lead Financial Stewardship - Perhaps most frustratingly, this conservative approach often extends to equipment and tools. You'll hear arguments for keeping inadequate technology "because it works" or underpaying staff "to keep costs down," even when these decisions are actually costing the organization money and mission impact in the long run through reduced productivity, lower morale, and higher turnover.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Yes! Your Nonprofit Needs Directors & Officers Insurance - Nonprofit board service is a noble endeavor and a chance to contribute to a cause you believe in. However, the very real personal risks get much less attention. Successful nonprofits make informed, strategic decisions about risk management.</image:title>
<image:caption>Let's dissect a critical, yet often overlooked, aspect of board member liability: Directors & Officers (D&O) liability insurance.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/65eb4c06d0234935e92f348b/431d138f-d93a-42f1-873f-29dd8cb9e3d8/business-elephant-financial-reporting.png</image:loc>
<image:title>Blog - Yes! Your Nonprofit Needs Directors & Officers Insurance - In these situations, the nonprofit itself is a target, but so too are individual board members. Their personal assets could be on the line.</image:title>
<image:caption>This is precisely where D&O insurance steps in. It’s designed to protect the personal assets of board members (and officers) against lawsuits related to their board service.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>

<image:title>Blog - Yes! Your Nonprofit Needs Directors & Officers Insurance - If I had a dollar for every time I’d heard a board member remark that they could recruit some high-profile, influential community member to join the board I could make a very, very generous gift to my favorite nonprofit.</image:title>
<image:caption>But you’ll have a hard time convincing that person to join your board if you don’t carry D&O. They won’t want the personal liability and they’ll also interpret its absence to mean the organization is immature. In nonprofits, it’s almost like having your mommy still pick out your clothes and dressing you.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Yes! Your Nonprofit Needs Directors & Officers Insurance - While the "Good Samaritan" laws in some states offer a degree of protection for volunteer board members of nonprofits, these protections are often limited and vary significantly.</image:title>
<image:caption>They typically shield volunteers from liability for simple negligence but not for gross negligence, willful misconduct, or certain types of intentional wrongdoing.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Yes! Your Nonprofit Needs Directors & Officers Insurance - This could form part (or all) of your annual gift to the organization.</image:title>
<image:caption>Does this sound unconventional? Maybe it is, but I’ve actually done it myself! And for small nonprofits, particularly those just starting out or those with limited operating budgets, the cost of D&O insurance can feel prohibitive.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Yes! Your Nonprofit Needs Directors & Officers Insurance - Despite your best efforts, you might find yourself on a board that isn't upholding its fiduciary responsibilities, where the risks outweigh the benefits, or where aspects of organizational immaturity come to weigh more on you than your dedication to the organization or the mission.</image:title>
<image:caption>In such cases, resignation becomes a necessary, albeit often difficult, decision. If you choose this path, absolute clarity and a meticulous paper trail are paramount.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Good Cuts + Bad Cuts: Don't Let Your Nonprofit Make These Budgeting Mistakes - Your nonprofit may have to make cuts this year. Maybe it was going to happen anyway, maybe it's related to the economic uncertainty, or maybe it's related to the change in Federal Grant priorities.</image:title>
<image:caption>When it comes to making budget cuts at nonprofits, just like with haircuts, some cuts are good and some cuts are bad. The right cuts will allow your organization to survive and eventually recover. The wrong cuts could lead to closing your doors.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Good Cuts + Bad Cuts: Don't Let Your Nonprofit Make These Budgeting Mistakes - Clinging to legacy programs. Beloved legacy programs absolutely should continue into the future in some organizations and some circumstances. Unfortunately, some legacy programs that have outlived their usefulness yet continue on for years in some nonprofits in sort of a zombie state. To make the healthiest, most effective cuts you have to focus on those cuts that get you to financial health while preserving core mission.</image:title>
<image:caption>Letting the squeakiest wheel win. Every organization has some stakeholders who are more vocal, and sometimes more drama inclined, than others. Letting those people dictate decisions is a recipe for making the wrong budget cuts. Instead successful nonprofits keep the mission and the organization's financial health as their North Star.</image:caption>

<image:caption>When you understand your nonprofit’s Unique Value Proposition (UVP), you can make cuts that are even more strategic. A UVP simply identifies and states what your organization does better than others.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Good Cuts + Bad Cuts: Don't Let Your Nonprofit Make These Budgeting Mistakes - This is where communication and collaboration can come into play. Go ahead and reach out to those sister organizations, talk to them, and explore those questions. More than likely, they’re also trying to figure out how they will navigate budget cuts as well.</image:title>
<image:caption>For example, let’s say that your nonprofit and two others in your community serve the chronically unhoused, providing a broad spectrum of services to anyone in that population. After doing the Matrix Map and figuring out your UVP, you’ve become clear that your best financial strategy would have you focusing on just veterans. And you know that Agency B already does a lot of work with teens and young adults. So why not open a dialog with those other agencies? If they know your nonprofit wants to specialize exclusively in veterans, they may be happy to refer that population to you; especially if they know that you’ll refer youth to Agency B and all others to Agency C.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Does Your Treasurer Have to be a CPA? No! - Having a CPA as a treasurer can be like using a sledgehammer to crack a nut. For most nonprofits, that person can bring more expertise than you really need to do the job well.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Does Your Treasurer Have to be a CPA? No! - Here's another area where having a CPA certification could actually be more of a hindrance than a help: many CPAs, but not all, default to speaking in jargon. That can actually make them less effective as a treasurer than a fifth grade math teacher, who has years of practice making math and numbers accessible, and even engaging, to non-experts.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Does your nonprofit make these common accounting mistakes? - Good bookkeeping doesn’t always get the respect and appreciation it deserves. That leads too many organizations to assume that a nonprofit employee can add it to their responsibilities as if it were just “other duties as assigned.” When someone has bookkeeping as one of five, ten, or more regular responsibilities, they can only ever achieve a DIY level of expertise. That can lead to costly errors and omissions.</image:title>
<image:caption>When that person is also the executive director or other top leader, then you should also consider carefully what else that person could do with their time. Even if they happen to have bookkeeping experience from a previous job, doing the bookkeeping ends up being a poor use of their time. It’s far better for the ED to have coffee cultivating a donor, for example, especially when a single check can pay for months of bookkeeping by a highly qualified bookkeeper.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Does your nonprofit make these common accounting mistakes? - Many nonprofit leaders still pay full price for all sorts of software, including the leading bookkeeping software, when most nonprofits can get significant discounts through TechSoup. At $75 per year for QuickBooks online, it’s practically free!</image:title>
<image:caption>Pro-Tip 1: Although QuickBooks has its shortcomings, that’s also true of any accounting software. Its relatively inexpensive price, its market dominance, and that its fairly user friendly, it is the right choice for 95% of nonprofits with budgets under $3 million.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Does your nonprofit make these common accounting mistakes? - Very few nonprofits conduct their meetings in languages like Klingon or Esperanto, yet far too many expect their leaders to make strategic financial decisions using financial reports in what is essentially a foreign language to them.</image:title>
<image:caption>13 out of 14 American adults have math anxiety. Once we understand that, it should come as no surprise that most board members and staff leaders get quiet if the only financial data they receive is the basic financial reports that their accounting software generates.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Does your nonprofit make these common accounting mistakes? - America has had an accountant shortage for years and the pandemic made it much harder for all employers to attract and retain good talent.</image:title>
<image:caption>Accountants, bookkeepers, and other financial professionals frequently start work early and leave the office late. That combined with our typically quiet personality types means that organizational leadership can easily overlook when we’re in imminent danger of burnout.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Escape the DIY Trap to Unlock Your Nonprofit’s Potential - Consider this: should you spend time on a task that could be delegated to someone else?</image:title>
<image:caption>For example, does it make sense for the executive director with an accounting background to spend a day assembling well-crafted financial reports for the board? While that might save them the cost of a Fractional CFO doing the work, what if that ED had spent the time fundraising instead? Wouldn’t coffee with four donors, who each give an average of $1,000, have been a better use of that day?</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Escape the DIY Trap to Unlock Your Nonprofit’s Potential - Consider outsourcing non-core tasks and leveraging technology solutions. Many administrative and operational tasks can be streamlined or automated, saving you time and resources for strategic initiatives.</image:title>
<image:caption>For example: managed IT. Sure, you’re smart enough to figure out 9 out of 10 computer-related challenges that you or your staff run into. You might even enjoy the challenge and change of pace. But once you take into account your time and the time of the staffer whose computer you’re fixing, the opportunity cost frequently outweighs more than you would have paid an outside professional to take care of it.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Fraud Prevention at Your Nonprofit - The nonprofit “vibe” represents a key ingredient for most successful nonprofits. It includes trust, optimism, friendliness, and genuine warmth towards other people that you rarely find outside the sector. This allows us to attract people with a higher level of loyalty, commitment, and skills than we probably could on the paycheck alone.</image:title>
<image:caption>These same strengths can also become a dangerous trap that too many good organizations fall into. An excess of trust in particular, without any checks and balances, can lead to situations that create moral, financial, and sometimes even physical jeopardy.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Do your financial staff feel constantly ambushed? - Most numbers people are introverts. And only 7% of Americans really feel at ease with numbers. So, it should come as no surprise that your financial staff might sometimes behave a little differently from the rest of your staff.</image:title>
<image:caption>Many people feel quite at ease with someone dropping into their office or an impromptu conversation in the hallway. Most financial people do not.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Do your financial staff feel constantly ambushed? - By "ambushed," I don't mean the other person's intent. My girlfriend and our friends certainly had the best of intentions when they threw that little surprise party.</image:title>
<image:caption>But “ambushed” is how we can feel when we have to engage in surprise interactions. That's especially true if we're tired, in the middle of recharging our batteries, or deep in thought. Or sometimes even just refilling our coffee.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Do your financial staff feel constantly ambushed? - This is about more than just your interactions with your financial staff. To get the best results, use your influence as a leader to cultivate a culture that welcomes introverts and gives them a sense of belonging.</image:title>
<image:caption>That doesn’t mean that your extroverts need to get muzzled or have to walk around on pins and needles; but it does mean finding a balance where the different personality types can work together in ways that allow them both to bring their best selves to the office.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Should I Switch to the Nonprofit Sector? - Although our country has hundreds of wealthy grantmaking organizations, they already get requests for funding that far exceed what they will award each year. You may have deep passion for your mission and a very compelling story to tell, but you’ll be getting in line behind hundreds of other organizations who have the same.</image:title>
<image:caption>Chances are, a nonprofit already exists in your area that does work in your passion area. In large cities, you might find dozens of such organizations.</image:caption>

<image:caption>And we need to remember that they’re not real, especially when crafting our job descriptions and hiring processes. Unless you have magical resources, adjust your expectations to hiring a human who can do a good job without expecting them to perform miracles. Carefully consider what hiring criteria you “must have” versus those that are “nice to have.” And please limit the “must have” criteria to what to job truly requires. For example some jobs, like a fundraiser, need someone with effective fundraising skills much more than skills like attention to detail, right? So “attention to detail” should end up in the “nice to have” column (if it’s a criteria at all).</image:caption>

Sesame Street covers some important professional skills that our professional training doesn’t usually cover.</image:title>
<image:caption>Count von Count doesn’t just love numbers: he loves to share his joy with others. When we remember to use him as a role model, it will go a long way toward having the relationships, influence, and impact we want to have beyond the general ledger.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Five, FIVE, Things that Make Count von Count a Great Role Model for Accountants - When it comes to complex data sets, including financial reports, we need to translate those beyond just the numbers and choosing appropriate vocabulary.</image:title>
<image:caption>Consider the fact that few of our non-accounting peers have an accounting background: 93% of American adults have math anxiety. So we need to thoughtfully transform those raw numbers into graphics that communicate the key concepts. This is also about inclusion: involving more people at the decision-making table, especially those from historically marginalized communities. (Yes, while numbers themselves might be neutral, the way we present them absolutely has an impact.)</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - NICRA: Getting your grants to cover indirect costs - Let’s say your nonprofit has one program with two government grants worth a total of $1.7 million per year and you have indirect costs of $300 thousand. If you only collect the de minimus rate of 10%, that means you still need to raise $130 thousand to cover all of your indirect costs. And that would be on top of fundraising to cover your unallowable costs.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Protect your nonprofit from inflation - Mickey Desai invited me to talk about inflation on the Nonprofit Snapcast (podcast). Why? It turns out that inflation has gone up in the past few months. If your nonprofit has a cash surplus sitting in a checking account, you’re losing significant purchasing power every month.</image:title>

<image:caption>This is an interview-styled webinar with Sean Hale, founder of Nonprofit CFOs, and Arlene Siller, founder of Ascend Nonprofit & Business Solutions. Learn the proactive steps your finance function can take to help secure more funding—before a single word is written. Co-Sponsor: Ascend Nonprofit & Business Solutions</image:caption>

<image:title>Sean Hale's Private Blog - Before taking a leadership job: Ask to see the financials - Case in point: I once applied for a job and was able to get a copy of some recent financial reports. But I couldn't make heads or tails of the reports. So I showed them to an auditor friend of mine and he couldn't either.</image:title>
<image:caption>During the job interview, I asked each person about the reports, about the organization's financial health, the cash position, etc. They couldn't give me a good answer either.</image:caption>

<image:title>Sean Hale's Private Blog - Good habits, bad habits - I learned the hard way that habits that brought me success in one area could bring me failure in a different context.</image:title>
<image:caption>In grad school, in my 20s, success required a high degree of perfectionism. Since I'm wired for that, it mostly came naturally for me to spend hours and hours word-smithing a phrase, to mercilessly hunt down and eliminate any use of the passive voice, and to ensure every single word could be supported by one or more primary sources.</image:caption>

<image:title>Sean Hale's Private Blog - How valuable is your personal network? - Even now, more than five years in, most of the talented people that work with me are individuals I've known for years – long before I'd even thought of opening a consulting practice.</image:title>
<image:caption>If you'd asked me in 2019 about the size of my personal network, my introvert brain would have compared itself to the extroverts around me who know hundreds of people, plus their kids, plus their pets, plus where they went on vacation ten years ago. My brain didn't, and still doesn't, work that way.</image:caption>

<image:title>Sean Hale's Private Blog - Starting a Consulting Business - Have you figured out your hedgehog concept yet? Or do you at least have some ideas? That was my first step. It took me several years to figure it all out.</image:title>
<image:caption>All of the business literature will tell you to go narrow and go deep. But that is difficult on day one especially if you have not figured out your hedgehog concept yet. I certainly hadn't.</image:caption>

<image:title>Sean Hale's Private Blog - Starting a Consulting Business - You don't need to answer this question right away. In fact, most consultants will start off on a single shingle basis meaning that they are the sole practitioner and they do all of the work, including business development, marketing, delivering the work, and everything in between.</image:title>
<image:caption>Eventually, if you do good work then the number of hours clients ask you to work will exceed your ability to deliver the work personally. What do you do then?</image:caption>

<image:title>Sean Hale's Private Blog - Starting a Consulting Business - A friend who is a nonprofit marketing expert recommended I begin with just my name: “Sean Hale Consulting.” She explained that especially at the beginning, people’s trust in me, and their familiarity with me, would be the practice’s greatest asset. To top it off, while I had some ideas of what my hedgehog concept would look like, I didn’t have the experience yet to know which would get the best results.</image:title>
<image:caption>It turned out that she was right on multiple levels. I couldn’t have guessed on day one how my consulting practice would evolve, especially over the first two years. In fact, it wouldn’t have even been on my list of most likely outcomes.</image:caption>

<image:title>Sean Hale's Private Blog - Starting a Consulting Business - Everyone will have a different experience. Almost everyone will have moments of worry and doubt.</image:title>

<image:title>About - old - Sean Hale I’ve served nonprofits for more than twenty years. I love getting the administrative side running smoothly so the organization can truly focus and shine. Over my career, I have made improvements that reduced waste, generated new revenue, boosted staff productivity and morale, grew financial transparency, and shrank risk. I’ve also helped boards and management to navigate complex situations and consistently left the organizations stronger and ready for their next stage of growth. Today I get to lead a team of outstanding nonprofit accounting and finance professionals. Together, we provide temporary and ongoing services to nonprofits so they can have the back office support they need for the whole organization to flourish. Let’s explore how you can strengthen your nonprofit’s back office so you can go back to delivering on mission.</image:title>

<image:title>About - Founder: Sean Hale I’ve served nonprofits for more than twenty-five years. Today I get to lead a team of outstanding nonprofit financial and administrative professionals. Together, we provide temporary and ongoing services to small and mid-sized nonprofits so they can have the back office support they need for the whole organization to flourish.</image:title>
